Mataro
Founded in 1919, Matara Dolls creates traditional kimekomi hina and Boys’ Day dolls, a craft that has been passed down for about 280 years since the Genbun era of the Edo period.
The origin of kimekomi dolls is traced to Takahashi Tadashige of Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto, whose work began around 280 years ago.

Modern kimekomi dolls developed after the Meiji period, when Tokyo dollmaker Yoshino Eikichi brought the technique from Kyoto and refined it, establishing the foundation of the contemporary style.
The first Matara master, Kanabayashi Matara, studied under Eikichi’s son Kiyoji and added his own creativity to complete the graceful style now known as Matara Dolls.

Matara is the only maker officially recognized by Kamigamo Shrine as the legitimate successor of the kimekomi doll tradition.
