A striking departure from the exuberant, densely choreographed group scenes Michael Joseph is so well known for, Jacuzzi James offers something altogether different: quiet intensity, sculptural beauty, and the power of a single figure completely commanding the frame.
Where Joseph’s rowdy banquet tableaux and surreal ensemble portraits burst with characters and chaos, this image distils his eye for drama into one poised, cinematic moment. The figure emerges from mist and reflected light, his body framed by tropical foliage and the curve of the jacuzzi, every surface beading with water and illuminated with Joseph’s signature precision.
The result is both sensuous and disciplined — a portrait that feels at once timeless and unmistakably of its era. Shot in London in 1990, the image shows Joseph’s mastery of contrast, form and atmosphere, revealing how compelling his work can be when the energy of his scenes collapses down to the stillness of a single subject.

My father, Michael Joseph, was an advertising photographer based in London from the mid-sixties to the early nineties. During that time, he created some truly remarkable work — his most famous moment being the Beggars Banquet gatefold for the Rolling Stones.
My ongoing mission is to share and celebrate what we call “the other photos” — the lesser-known but equally captivating pieces from his archive. Within this collection you’ll find a mix of test prints, images from specific photo shoots, and more personal works, all created with his characteristic passion and devotion.
Many of these images owe their atmosphere to the magic of the darkroom: intricate group scenes, striking still lifes, and moments that draw the viewer in and stir emotion. Variety is key - and I often offer unique, one-off pieces.
I hope you enjoy discovering my father’s work, and I look forward to sending you a genuine piece of photographic history.
