This item is a ceramic incense burner (kōro) made in Japan. The exterior is crafted from ceramic with openwork carving, and is finished with a soft green glaze. Subtle variations in tone and color can be observed across the surface, resulting from the firing process. The interior is fitted with a removable copper insert, designed to safely hold incense ash or charcoal while protecting the ceramic body from direct heat exposure. Incense burners equipped with copper liners such as this have traditionally been used in Japanese kōdō (incense ceremony) and tea ceremony settings. In modern contexts, they are appreciated not only for their functionality but also as decorative objects. The natural glaze flow and slight individual variations in form are characteristic of hand-crafted studio ceramics and are not considered defects.
