Ouchi dolls (Ouchi-nuri lacquerware) are a nationally designated traditional craft rooted in the history of the Ouchi clan, which flourished in Yamaguchi during the Muromachi period. They originated from a legend in which Hiroyo Ouchi—the 24th head of the clan—summoned doll makers from Kyoto to create numerous dolls to comfort his beautiful wife (a princess from Kyoto) who was suffering from homesickness. Thanks to this heartwarming story, the male-and-female pair of Ouchi dolls is widely cherished as a talisman for marital harmony and family safety, making them popular choices for celebrations, gifts, or as alternatives to traditional Hina dolls.
