-> Fishing was an important source of food and income throughout the Roman Empire, particularly in coastal communities and settlements beside rivers and lakes. Archaeological finds include hooks in many different sizes, reflecting the variety of fish and techniques involved. Bronze was well suited to this purpose because it resisted corrosion better than iron, while strongly curved points helped prevent the catch from escaping.
