This is an original Maripu statue from Sumba Island. Made from a heavy wood the statue shows significant signs of weathering and thus its old age. These Maripu (forefather) statues were found outside and inside the local houses to protect agains evil spirits, illness and as respect to ones deceased family members. Collected in the 1980's. This statue was at least 40 -50 years old at time of purchase. Estimated to be the early 20th century. The statue has two holes that were repaired with a chalk like substance. There are some more recent on the face. See pictures. The base is obviously worn from water and nature damage. The statue has been in possession for 40 years and does not show any signs of further deterioration. It is 83 cm high, and 14 cm in diameter. It weighs approx. 5 kg.
