The specimen shows the classic enamel plate pattern characteristic of the genus Mammuthus, making it a recognizable and attractive display fossil. During the Pleistocene, northern China was home to several mammoth species, most notably the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) in the Late Pleistocene, and the earlier steppe mammoth (Mammuthus trogontherii).
