Barré, Louis (text) – Roux, Henri (plates)
Paris, Firmin Didot frères, 1840.
A highly sought-after volume from the monumental Herculanum et Pompéi series, devoted entirely to the “Musée secret”—the restricted corpus of erotic objects unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum and long withheld from public display.
This volume is distinguished by its abundance of erotic imagery, reproduced as finely engraved copper plates after ancient originals. The illustrations document the full spectrum of Roman sexual iconography:
- Heterosexual and homosexual scenes,
- Phallic imagery (amulets, reliefs, domestic decoration),
- Explicit mythological and everyday motifs,
- Human–animal hybrids and satyric figures.
All illustrations are present.
Binding: Plain 20th-century black imitation-leather bookbinder’s binding.
Condition: Poor to fair condition. The volume shows extensive staining throughout, with pronounced water damage and widespread foxing affecting many pages and plates.
