1977s Japanese Vintage Art Book
Saburōsuke Okada (1869–1939) was a Japanese Western-style painter who studied under Kuroda Seiki and was influenced by Impressionism.
After studying in France, he developed refined depictions of Japanese women and landscapes that blended Western technique with Japanese sensibility.
He served as a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he trained many important artists, including Chihiro Iwasaki and Setsuko Migishi.
In 1912, he co-founded the Hongo Institute of Western Painting with Takeji Fujishima, contributing greatly to the development of modern Japanese art.
In 1937, he received the Order of Culture, becoming one of the first recipients.
Gentaro Koito (1887–1978) was a Japanese Western-style painter active from the late Meiji to the Shōwa period.
Born in Tokyo, he was inspired by Takeji Fujishima and studied Western painting, later gaining recognition at major national exhibitions.
After a period of withdrawal from the art world, he returned and established a distinctive style through still lifes and landscapes.
He served as a professor at leading art institutions and held important positions in Japan’s art organizations.
In recognition of his achievements, he received the Order of Culture in 1965.
