The bow represents driving away evil spirits, while the sword symbolises protection and courage. This style of display originates from samurai household customs of the Kamakura–Muromachi periods. The decorative sword features gold-coloured fittings with a phoenix motif. In Japanese tradition, the phoenix represents renewal, virtue, and auspicious fortune. It is often associated with good beginnings and the hope for a successful future, making it a fitting symbol for Boys’ Day celebrations. The bow includes finely detailed feathered arrows and wrapped sections, with decorative cords adding to the overall display. The bases are finished in black lacquer. There is some discolouration on the handle and scabbard of the sword, and the central metal fitting is loose. The fastening cord is missing. The lacquered stands show minor scuffs from age. Overall, good to very good used condition for a Showa-period display. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions of Bow and Arrows: approx. H 60.5 cm W 12 cm D 14.5 cm Dimensions of Sword: approx.
