A vibrant tall six-panel byôbu 雛形屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined painting of two elegant flower carts 花車 (hana’guruma), each bearing bamboo baskets 花かご (hanakago) overflowing with seasonal blooms. The cart on the right is crafted in simple wood with black iron accents and holds two ovoid-shaped baskets filled with blossoms. The central cart is more opulent, lacquered entirely in black and adorned with gilded metal fittings. It carries a large, plump sack-shaped basket tied with a vivid red silk cord, and features an upstanding rim shaped like splashing waves. The baskets brim with a rich variety of flowers, including white and pink peonies 牡丹 (botan), cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura), bright orange star lilies カノコユリ (kanokoyuri), hibiscus 芙蓉 (fuyô) in soft hues of yellow, orange and pink, magnolia 木蓮 (mokuren), and pink and blue hydrangeas 紫陽花 (ajisai), among many others. Executed in colour and ink on golden silk, set against a paper support. The screen is bordered by a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective corner hardware carved in an openwork floral design. The reverse is lined with olive-green silk. Signed and sealed twice in the lower right corner: ‘Shihô’ 子鳳.
