Guldsmedsaktiebolaget GAB - Stockholm - Candelabro - .830 argento - 1897, Svezia
Expert Description: Swedish Silver Candlestick by Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (GAB), circa 1897–1901
This imposing single candlestick (or chamber candelabrum) is a superb example of late 19th-century Swedish neoclassical Empire-revival silverwork, produced by Guldsmedsaktiebolaget (GAB), Stockholm—one of Sweden's leading silversmithing firms, established in 1868 and celebrated for its precise craftsmanship and elegant historical revivals.
Executed in solid silver (standard Swedish 830/1000 purity, confirmed by the national three crowns mark), the piece weighs 348.6 grams and measures 26.5 cm in height. The form is characteristically Empire-inspired: a boldly tapered and fluted stem with deep vertical gadrooning, enriched by repoussé acanthus leaf bands, swirling floral chasing, and beaded guilloche borders. The capital incorporates a removable bobèche richly decorated with repoussé foliage, while the domed circular base—raised on three claw-and-ball feet—features alternating fleur-de-lis and palmette motifs around the rim, exemplifying the refined ornamental vocabulary GAB employed in its high-end table silver.
Hallmarks include:
Maker's mark "GAB" for Guldsmedsaktiebolaget, Stockholm.
National three crowns mark in trefoil shield.
Date letters: "X6" (1900) on one component (likely the removable bobèche) and "T6" (1897) on the main body—consistent with Swedish practice where separate parts of composite objects were assayed independently before final assembly.
Adding significant historical and sentimental value, the base bears a contemporary engraved inscription in Swedish:
"Från vännerna i Grythyttan till Gustaf Moberg 3/5 1901"
("From the friends in Grythyttan to Gustaf Moberg, 3 May 1901").
This confirms the candlestick as a commissioned presentation gift, crafted in the late 1890s and completed/engraved for delivery in spring 1901—perhaps marking a significant personal or community occasion for Gustaf Moberg in the small Örebro County town of Grythyttan.
Condition is very good for its 125+ years: brightly polished with only minor surface wear, light scratches commensurate with age, and no evidence of significant damage or restoration. The chasing remains crisp, and the removable bobèche fits securely.
