This hanging scroll presents a lively and humorous ink painting attributed to Sengai Gibon (1750–1837), the celebrated Zen monk and painter known for his spontaneous brushwork and playful expressions of Zen philosophy. The artwork depicts a cheerful farmer enjoying a drink beside his hoe, rendered with the simple yet spirited lines characteristic of Sengai’s unique style. The calligraphy above harmonizes with the imagery, creating a gentle and humorous scene that conveys the lightness and freedom found in his Zen teachings. The scroll is accompanied by an appraised storage box bearing an inscription by the Sengaizammai-kai (Sengai Study Society), a recognized research group devoted to the study and authentication of Sengai’s works. This appraisal box adds valuable provenance and historical confidence to the piece.
