Salvador Dali (1904-1989) - Cavalier casqué aux papillons -Life is a Dream-

This is an original hand-signed etching and aquatint by Salvador Dalí (1904–1989), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a central figure of Surrealism. Titled Cavalier casqué aux papillons ("Helmeted Rider with Butterflies"), this work is part of a prestigious suite of 12 prints created in 1971 to illustrate La vida es sueño (Life is a Dream) by Spanish playwright Pedro Calderón de la Barca. The series was printed in a limited edition of 250 impressions on Richard de Bas handmade paper and a few deluxe copies on Japan paper. This impression is numbered 57/250 and is hand-signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin. The printing was executed by the ateliers Bracons and J.J.J. Rigal, based on drawings by Dalí which were further reworked by the artist. This composition, blending surreal dream imagery with a classical rider and butterfly motifs, exemplifies Dalí’s unique ability to merge technical mastery with fantastical symbolism. The explosive background, intricate detailing, and dreamlike tone reflect Dalí’s signature visual language. Dalí’s graphic works have been exhibited and collected internationally. His etchings share technical and visionary affinities with earlier masters of printmaking like Goya, Piranesi, and Rembrandt. Condition: Fair to good condition. The sheet shows visible foxing (small brown spots), particularly in the margins. There is some mild waviness to the paper (light warping) and a subtle browning typical of vintage handmade paper. The image itself remains in very good condition, with vibrant colour tones and strong embossing.
