The sculptor has lavished attention on every surface, from the spiralling curls of the mane and tail to the layered harness, tassels and cloud-like flames rising at the back to form the incense cup. Traces of gilding highlight details such as the floral medallions on the ball and parts of the harness, adding depth and richness to the dark, time-worn surface. Estimated dating from the 19th to early 20th century, this piece would originally have served as an incense burner on an altar or scholar’s table. The guardian lion, or shishi, is a classic protective creature in Chinese art, believed to ward off evil, safeguard the household and bring prosperity. The brocade ball beneath its paw symbolises power, authority and the ability to keep good fortune firmly under control, while the vigorous pose conveys both strength and playful energy. The bronze shows age-appropriate wear with rubbing, small knocks, patina, dust, areas of corrosion and ingrained soiling, all consistent with long use and handling. The original wooden storage box is included and shows warping, scratches and stains from age. Please refer carefully to the photographs for a full impression of the condition. Despite its age and signs of use, this richly modelled incense burner remains a striking and characterful work, full of movement and symbolism, and would make an exceptional centrepiece for any collection of Chinese bronzes or Asian decorative arts.
