Dial and Hands
The dial is a stunning vertically brushed silver that catches the light beautifully, serving as a perfect backdrop for the polished applied block indices. It features the applied "Seiko" and "LM" logos, along with the "Special" script and the Daini Seikosha lightning bolt emblem. A framed day and date window is positioned at 3 o'clock, featuring a bilingual English and Kanji calendar wheel. The original handset is sharp and free of corrosion. The visual impact of the dial is dramatically enhanced by the original faceted "Cut Glass" crystal, which splits the light into mesmerizing geometric patterns.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a distinctive hidden-lug design that gives the watch a sleek and integrated appearance. The case lines retain their original sharp definition, alternating between brushed surfaces and polished bevels. The faceted mineral crystal is the highlight of this reference, showing multiple planes of glass that create a jewel-like effect. The crown is original and sits flush against the case side. The caseback clearly displays the reference 5206-6100/6110 and remains in excellent preservation.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the highly regarded Seiko Caliber 5206A, a 23-jewel automatic movement running at 28,800 beats per hour. This "Special" grade movement was a high-performance engine of its era and is historically significant as the ancestor to Seiko's modern 4S high-end caliber series. The movement presents as exceptionally clean and bright in the photographs, offering instant start-up and a quick-set function for the day and date mechanisms. It is currently running within vintage tolerances.
Strap
The watch is fitted with a new high-quality black leather strap with stitched edges. It complements the dressy aesthetic of the silver dial and provides a comfortable fit for a variety of wrist sizes.
Condition
This timepiece is in near-mint condition, appearing exceptionally well-preserved for a watch from 1972. The case edges are crisp with factory-like definition, showing effectively no signs of polishing or wear. The dial is flawless, with no spotting or patina. The movement is pristine, as evidenced by the case-open photographs, indicating careful ownership and storage over the decades.
Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in diameter excluding the crown, which was a standard and classic gents' size for the era. The hidden lug design allows it to wear slightly larger and sit prominently on the wrist.
Remarks
Finding a Lord Matic Special in this condition is becoming increasingly difficult. This reference combines the high-beat precision of the legendary 52 stream movements with the funky, geometric aesthetics of the 1970s. It is a perfect collector's piece that bridges the gap between vintage charm and high-end mechanical performance.
History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Lord Matic (LM) line was positioned just below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko models, offering everyday luxury to the Japanese market. The "Special" designation was added to top-tier models equipped with highest-grade movements (5206 and 5216), which operated at a higher frequency and offered superior accuracy. These movements are today celebrated by collectors as some of the finest automatic calibers Seiko ever mass-produced.
