Kobako piccola scatola - Lacca - Giappone - Metà del XIX secolo (fine periodo Edo)

An unusual lacquer kobako 小箱 (small box) with tray and cover in the shape of overlapping lozenges. Of distinctive design, formed as two overlapping lozenges, the exterior finished in a rôiro’urushi 蝋色漆 (mirror-black lacquer) ground. Finely decorated in gold takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer) and hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer). The flush-fitting lid features to one side a sayagata 紗綾形 (meander) geometric pattern, and to the other a stylised chrysanthemum 菊 (kiku) band framing a central brocade lozenge motif. The sides are adorned with further geometric designs. The interior of the lid reveals a delicate waterside scene with small flowers and rocks, subtly embellished with kirigane 切金 (gold flakes). The accompanying tray is decorated with a fence motif overlaid with brocade patterns. Both the tray and interior are finished in rich reddish gold nashiji 梨地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) with golden fundame 粉溜地 (matte lacquer) rims. Period: Japan – First half 19th century (Late Edo period) Dimensions: Height 10.8 cm; Width 11.7 cm; Length 20.3 cm Considering its age in a very good condition with minor wear conform age; a small crack is present to the side of the lid.
