Nagasaki Branch of the Japan Realism Photography Group - The Testimony of Nagasaki 1970 - 1970
The Nagasaki branch of the Japan Realism Photography Group (founded in 1963, with photographer Shigeru Tamura as its first chairman) published a photo book titled ‘Testimony of Nagasaki.’
The Japan Realism Photography Group is an independent creative movement composed of professional and amateur photographers, critics, and editors who aim to ‘protect freedom of expression through photographic creative activities and contribute to the development of peace and democracy in Japan’ (from the group's website). Currently, the group is led by Eiji Hirai, a renowned photojournalist, and continues its activities.
Published 25 years after the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki in 1945, the book begins with the words, ‘Here lies a point of sublimation where resignation and the fierce determination to expose the culprits intertwine,’ and records the harsh daily lives of atomic bomb survivors who were plagued by various symptoms and lived side by side with death, accompanied by their testimonies.
These photographs are a crystallisation of realism that captures these facts without letting them fade away and without turning away from reality. At the end of the book, there is a text by Ishizu Ryosuke, a photographer who was the chairman of the West Japan Block of the Tamura and Realism Photography Group.
