Suzuribako (Writing Box) – Gold & Silver Maki-e Chrysanthemum on Nashiji Ground – Signed Shoko Sei (尚古製)
Meiji period (1868–1912)
Refined antique Japanese suzuribako (writing box) with gold and silver maki-e on nashiji ground, signed Shoko-sei (尚古製) — an elegant example of Meiji-period lacquer art combining technical mastery and aesthetic refinement.
Description:
This refined suzuribako (writing box) was crafted by Shoko Sei during the Meiji period.
Shoko Sei was a workshop active from the late 19th to early 20th century, renowned for producing high-quality lacquerware and metalwork that combined traditional Japanese craftsmanship with Western decorative sensibilities.
Pieces bearing the Shoko Sei signature were often created for export and exhibition, reflecting the height of Meiji-era artistry that captivated Western collectors during the Japonisme movement.
The box is fully finished in fine nashiji (pear-skin) lacquer and decorated with exquisite taka-maki-e (raised gold and silver lacquer) chrysanthemum motifs — a classical Japanese symbol of longevity and imperial grace.
The interior of the lid is adorned with a gold maki-e landscape featuring pine trees and a mountain, showcasing the artisan’s exceptional skill and refined aesthetic.
The set includes an inkstone (suzuri), a silver water dropper (suiteki), and the original wooden box (tomobako) inscribed “尚古製 硯箱 (Shoko Sei Suzuribako).”
A remarkable example of Meiji-period lacquer art that harmonizes functionality and beauty.
