J. H. Bastone da passeggio - .925 argento - 1925 Early Art Deco
Antique Bamboo Walking Stick with Silver Mounts – Birmingham, 1925 – by Silversmith J.H. (likely J. Howell & Co Ltd) – Early Art Deco Period
Elegant gentleman’s walking stick crafted from fine polished bamboo, featuring sterling silver mounts. The crook handle ends with a beautifully engine-turned silver cap, decorated with geometric wave patterns – a hallmark of the early Art Deco style. A matching silver collar adds refinement to the shaft, which is finished with a brass ferrule. Both silver fittings are clearly hallmarked for Birmingham, 1925, with the maker’s mark J.H. (likely J. Howell & Co Ltd, active until 1925). The design reflects the transition from late Edwardian elegance to the sleek, modern lines of the Art Deco era.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, bamboo walking sticks with silver fittings became a symbol of refinement and social status. Favoured by gentlemen for their lightness, strength, and fashionable appearance, they combined exotic materials with fine English silversmithing. By the 1920s, such canes had evolved into elegant accessories rather than purely functional supports – perfectly matching the sophisticated style of the Art Deco period.
Good antique condition – surface wear consistent with age and use. The bamboo shaft remains straight, solid, and attractively patinated.
