Byôbu (schermo pieghevole) - Foglia d'argento dorata, legno laccato, seta, carta - Giappone - XVIII secolo (periodo Edo)
A gorgeous tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School style painting in low relief, depicting a lush composition of chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku) blooming along a thatched fence.
Clusters of chrysanthemums in different heights, colours and form, mostly white with yellow centres, but also blue, orange hearths and red blossoms, sprout in sprays behind the fence that runs across the panels. The flower heads and fence are finely modelled in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste).
The composition is set on a silk ground covered with oxidized goldish silver leaf that has developed an attractive patina. It is bordered by two brocade silk bands: a slender green inner border and a broad navy blue outer border. The screen is framed in black lacquered wood and fitted with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – 18th century (Edo period).
Dimensions:
Total width 367 cm (2 × 62.5 cm, 4 × 60.5 cm); Height 172 cm.
Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition, with restorations and traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Some restoration is visible on the first and second panel, and the reverse shows areas of repapering. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
This folding screen is well-suited for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a single work of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
