William Weichert Aneroid barometer - Legno, Ottone
Victorian aneroid barometer with thermometer, manufactured in Vienna and retailed by Willi Weichert, 119 Bute Docks, Cardiff, circa 1870–1890.
The circular dial is engraved with the traditional weather indications “Stormy – Rain – Change – Fair – Very Dry”, together with a dual pressure scale from 28 to 31 inches of mercury. The lower section includes a thermometer calibrated in both Centigrade and Fahrenheit.
The dial bears several prestigious inscriptions attesting to the maker’s provenance:
“Vienna. The Order of the Golden Cross & Crown”
“Prize Medals. Paris 1867, Havre 1868”
Housed in a circular brass case with brass bezel and convex glass, the instrument retains its original twin pointers (manual reference and pressure indicator) and central adjustment knob.
A distinguished and well-preserved example of 19th-century continental craftsmanship, distributed in Britain through a respected maritime instrument retailer at Cardiff’s historic Bute Docks.
Dimensions: Approx. 28 cm diameter, 6.5 cm depth
Condition: Appears in working order; however, due to age, accuracy and precision cannot be guaranteed. Minor age-related wear and patina consistent with age. Glass intact and pointers move freely.
