ITEM:
(Late Taishō period, ca. 1915–1925)
This complete Japanese samurai armor (gusoku) is an exquisite ceremonial reconstruction inspired by Edo-period models, crafted during the late Taishō era (circa 1915–1925). It reflects the enduring craftsmanship and aesthetic of the samurai tradition in early modern Japan.
The kabuto is a multi-plate suji bachi helmet, black lacquered with golden accents, topped with an impressive gilded maedate featuring a relief inscription invoking divine protection, flanked by elegantly curved kuwagata horns. The fukigaeshi are richly decorated with printed paper and multicolored floral motifs in Edo makie style, adorned with gilt metal appliqués of exceptional precision.
The menpō (face mask) is of the ressei type, lacquered in deep black, with natural horsehair moustache and gilded teeth, projecting a fierce and dignified expression.
The nodowa (throat guard) and dō (cuirass) are constructed from lacquered iron plates, featuring at the front the gold mon —a five-petal floral crest with a central sun motif— symbolizing noble lineage and high rank. The sode (shoulder guards) and kusazuri (skirt plates) display a striking silk odoshi lacing in blue, cream, and vermilion, reminiscent of elite Edo-period craftsmanship.
The kote, haidate, and suneate integrate lacquered iron, fine brocade, and leather elements, showcasing superb Taishō-era workmanship. The interior brocades, with golden floral and geometric motifs, highlight its ceremonial and display-oriented purpose.
This armor remains in its original mount, perfectly proportioned and visually cohesive. Late Taishō examples such as this were produced by workshops descended from Edo armor makers, commissioned for historical commemorations, displays, or by former samurai families preserving their heritage after the Meiji Restoration.
An authentic samurai armor that will be the central focus of any room where it is placed and that will delight any fan of Japanese art. This exclusive piece is making it an incredible opportunity for any collector of Japanese, war or simply historical art to get their hands on a piece that will attract attention wherever it is displayed, from offices, to private homes, offices or restaurants and will give a regal look to any place. The armour has gilded details that show the quality of the piece. The incredible workmanship accentuates such ornate pieces as the kabuto, the mempo and the Do. The stand to assemble it and the box are included. This armour is sure to delight any collector of Asian art and will be the focal point of any visitor's home, shop or office. There is a very ancient object and there are damaged by time and tears. Due to the delicacy of continuous assembly and disassembly, returns are not allowed on old armor.
