Byôbu (schermo pieghevole) - Seta, foglia d'argento dorata, legno laccato, carta - Giappone - Periodo Meiji (1868-1912)
A gorgeous medium-size six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) painted with a lush flower garden, set against a goldish-silver leaf ground that has developed an attractive aged patina.
The composition features a tall slanting pine tree 松 (matsu) surrounded by lespedeza 萩 (hagi), yellow rapeseed blossoms 菜の花 (nanohana), and tall blades of pampas grass 薄 (susuki). Among them grow spearflowers 藪柑子 (yabukôji) bearing red berries, and a single bright white lily 百合 (yuri).
The painting is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender golden inner band and a broad dark outer band, and it is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with metal hardware.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868–1912).
Dimensions: Total width 267.8 cm (2 × 45.9 cm, 4 × 44 cm); Height 137.5 cm
In a very good condition considering its age, with expected traces of wear on both sides and restorations, including touch-ups to the silver leaf along the edge of 4th panel. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition reference.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
