Description: Work from the school of Fontainebleau. Engraved by René Boyvin after the drawings of Léonard Thiry. Subject: Medea sacrificing a black ram to Hebe and Hecate, in order to rejuvenate Aeson, Jason's father. Without the cartouche below that was printed from a seperate plate. For 'The Conquest of the Golden Fleece'. France, 1563. The first edition was unnumbered and dates from 1563. Signed 'Br' (Boyvin) on the shovel. Provenance: Polycarpe Charles Séchant (1803-1874) (Lugt.3904). His red collection stamp 'S' in a rectangle on the print. Dimensions: 15,60 x 22,80 cm Literature: Robert-Dumesnil 1835-71 / Le Peintre-Graveur Français (VIII.42.57) ----- Léonard Thiry (1500-1550) who designed this prints was a painter and designer of Flemish origins, working as one of Rosso's principal assistants in Fontainebleau from 1536 to Rosso's death in 1540. Returned to Antwerp c.1545. Now known only from drawings and prints after his designs, mostly by Boyvin. The design drawings by Thiry for this series of the Golden Fleece are in Leyden.
