Sophia Loren, born in Rome in 1934, was one of the queens of cinema and perhaps Italy's last great diva. With her voluptuous body and warm sensuality, she represented the archetype of femininity and the "bosom miracle"; later she was regarded as the timeless ideal of beauty and success. Sophia Loren (born Sofia Villani Scicolone) grew up in Naples in the poorest of circumstances and came to film via photo novels and beauty contests, where she met producer Carlo Ponti in 1953, whom she later married and who produced more than half of her 50 or so films. In the 1950s, the almond-eyed, brunette, broad-chested and busty Loren portrayed spirited and fun-loving women of the people, fisherwomen, pizza bakers ("How Wonderful to Be a Woman"), but also the beautiful, frivolous girl from the poorer neighborhoods who strives for the top and has to deal with crooks ("Too Bad You're a Canaille").
