Byôbu (schermo pieghevole) - Foglia d'oro, legno laccato, seta - Kanô School-style - Giappone - Prima metà del periodo Edo (17°–18° secolo)

A superb large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Kanô School-style painting on a shimmering gold-leaf ground, depicting birds within a picturesque landscape. Along a tranquil river, several white herons 白鷺 (shirasagi) gather at the water’s edge, some near the edge while others descend in flight. A lone kingfisher 川蝉 (kawasemi) perches nearby. The birds are framed by old and young weeping willows 柳 (yanagi), their long tendrils hanging like translucent curtains. At the moss-covered base of the willow on the left grow soft pink peonies 牡丹 (botan) and young bamboo shoots 竹 (take). The sapling on the right is enclosed by a simple thatched fence. Across the water a large cherry tree 桜 (sakura) bursts into bloom with subtle low-relief detailing. The scene is enveloped by dense clouds of gold leaf. Executed in mineral pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The painting is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a thin green inner band and a broad greyish-blue outer band. The screen is set within a red lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware. Period: Japan – First half Edo period (17th–18th century) The protective frame was expertly and expensively refurbished in Japan, likely during the Taishô period (1912–1926), a process requiring considerable skill and knowledge. Dimensions: Total width: 366.4 cm (2 x 62.4 cm, 4 x 60.4 cm); Height: 171.3 cm. Considering its age in very good restored condition, with traces of wear conform age on both sides. Including in front showing touched-ups and restored gold leaf, mainly along the edges. The reverse displays areas of repapering and some reinforced hinges. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
