This exquisite ukiyo-e woodblock print was created by Kitagawa Utamaro, a master ukiyo-e artist of Japan’s Edo period. The original work dates from approximately 1795 to 1801 (Kansei 7 to Kyōwa 1 in the Edo period), and this is a reprint from the 1940s-1950s.
The image depicts the classic pair from Japanese folklore: Yamauba (山姥,a mountain witch or goddess of the forest, said to be Kintarō’s foster mother) and Kintarō (金太郎,a prodigy with superhuman strength).
Due to the passage of time, the washi paper shows traces of oxidation, yellowing, mold spots, and creases, but the overall condition remains good.
