Durlacher Faiencemanufaktur 1805 - Brocca - Terracotta

The photos present a pear-shaped wine jug made in german town of Durlach, probably comissioned for the wedding between “Georg Walther & Maria Schaferin”. The couple is painted on its middle part with their names and date of creation “1805” written above them. Baden State Museum owns an extensive collection of Durlach faience jugs (100+) visible on their site catalogue; Badisches Landes Museum: " The Durlach faience manufactory was founded in 1723 with the privilege of Margrave Carl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach (1679-1738). His successor Margrave Karl Friedrich of Baden-Durlach (1728-1811) granted a new privilege in 1749. Until the 19th century, the Durlach faience manufactory remained the leading ceramics workshop in Baden. She supplied the court, nobility and bourgeoisie with everyday tableware and decorative pieces made of faience. Wine jugs with bulbous ear handles, called pear jugs because of their bulbous shape, are the most famous products of the Durlach faience manufactory. They were produced from the mid-18th century until the end of production in the 1840s. The scenic decorations of these pear jugs convey everyday stories, and rhymed sayings betray contemporary ways of thinking. Durlach pear jugs are cultural, social and contemporary historical evidence of the highest order. By mentioning their name, year and place of residence, a few original owners of Durlach pear jugs can be verified with their biographical data. From this it can be concluded that the pear jugs were probably popular wedding gifts, but most of them were created for reasons unknown today. Durlach pear jugs were valued by their owners. Some wear a tin mount. " Condition: Suffered a few little chips around its base. The mouth and handle were restored by a specialist.
