Bruneau - The Reader

Description
Bruneau - The Reader
Watercolour - Hand signed - 1988

Beautiful watercolour on paper by Bruneau from the 1980s.

Bruneau (born 1957 in Wilrijk, lives and works in Berchem) is an enthusiastic voluminous painter. His work doesn't really need an explanation. He likes to work in series and around simple themes like a hat or a chair. His painting and drawing style refers to comics, cartoons and sometimes Keith Haring. Bruneau’s work is never melancholy or negative. As a painter he seeks the positive note in everything. Humour is never far away. Sometimes he draws more than he paints. Precise and sharp. He edits, paints over, and works in layers. Uses text, crosses out a text, overwrites.

The work offered is from 1989 and dates back to the period in which Bruneau was known – especially in Antwerp, he was a cult figure. It was just before his big break: an exhibition at the Muhka, an exhibition in New York... Newspapers called him "Matisse's grandson."

Bruneau’s works are also part of the collection of the M HKA.
