Tan glazed full calfskin binding, one rubbed and slightly open corner,
the covers are acceptable, a snag on the headcap, 2 joints are lightly
cracked over about 2 and 3 cm, adorned spine with five raised bands with a garnet morocco title label, gilded triple fillets and fleurons in the corners of the covers,
gilded fillet roll on the cover edges. Sound binding and well-holding bookblock, fresh inside and text in good condition, no soiling, I noted one spot of foxing on page 137, handwritten notes on the title page.
Lovely period binding.

Illustrated with a frontispiece by A. Bloteling, 9 full-page plate and
8 fold-out plates, a vignette on the title page and an in text vignette,
a restoration without loss on the double plate on page 171 (3 last photos).

New edition of this famous and terrifying work, dealing with the tortures
inflicted by crucifixion.

Juste Lipse, original name: Joost Lips (1547 / 1606),
a Flemish philosopher and humanist.
