Opis od sprzedawcy

Wall panel - "Orpheus, Eurydice and Hermes" — Grand Tour Brass Relief Panel after the Antique — Beaded Black Frame — Italy, late 19th
A fine decorative brass relief panel, hand-worked in repoussé, reproducing the celebrated ancient Greek relief of "Orpheus, Eurydice and Hermes." The scene shows Hermes (left, wearing the traveller's petasos) grasping the wrist of Eurydice (centre) to lead her back to the underworld, while Orpheus (right) turns for a last look at his wife — the tragic climax of the myth, rendered in the restrained, linear classical style of the famous 5th-century-BC Greek original.

The composition is taken directly from one of the best-known reliefs of classical antiquity. The lost Greek original (attributed to the circle of Phidias/Alkamenes, c. 420–410 BC) survives only through Roman marble copies, the most celebrated of which are held in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, the Villa Albani in Rome, and the Louvre (Ma 854/1659, ex-Borghese collection). Brass and bronze reproductions of this scene were produced as decorative "Grand Tour" pieces for travellers visiting Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum — this panel is a good example of that tradition.

Features:

Panel: Repoussé (hand-hammered relief) brass sheet — warm golden patina throughout
Scene: "Orpheus, Eurydice and Hermes" — after the celebrated Greco-Roman relief (Naples/Villa Albani/Louvre type)
Frame: Black-painted beaded/ball-moulding border frame, classic gallery-style edge
Patina: Natural aged brass tone with light surface wear consistent with age
Mounting: Ready to hang
Style: Neoclassical / Grand Tour / Greco-Roman revival, after the Antique
Condition: Good vintage condition — natural patina, minor surface wear and small dents to the high points of the relief consistent with age (see photos)
Origin: Italy (Naples region workshops were the principal producers of this type of Grand Tour reproduction)
Period: Late 19th century

A lovely decorative accent for a classical, Mediterranean, or eclectic interior — equally at home in a study, library, hallway or above a fireplace as a striking conversation piece with genuine art-historical pedigree.

Specifications:

Materials: Brass, wood/composite (frame)
Condition: Good — used with minor aging signs
Era: 1800-1900
Origin: Italy
