Dutch Art Deco Oak Side Table, The Hague School, 1920s
A charming Dutch Art Deco side table from the 1920s, executed in oak and oak veneer and showing the restrained architectural character associated with the Haagse School / The Hague School.
The design is beautifully balanced. A circular top is supported by four slender rectangular legs, creating a light and open structure, while the round lower solid oak tier adds both stability and a strong horizontal counterpoint. Along the edge of the tabletop runs a finely carved beaded border, a subtle decorative detail that gives the otherwise sober design a more refined finish.
Particularly characteristic are the black-stained ends of the legs. These dark accents were frequently used in Dutch furniture of the period to sharpen the geometry of a piece and visually anchor it to the floor. Against the warm oak they introduce a small but very effective graphic contrast.
The table sits stylistically between two important currents in Dutch design of the 1920s. The Amsterdam School was generally more expressive and sculptural, favouring rich materials, dramatic forms and elaborate craftsmanship. The Hague School tended towards a more restrained and architectural vocabulary of clear planes, strong proportions and geometric construction.
This table leans towards the latter. Its slender uprights, circular planes and restrained decoration give it a distinctly modernist appearance.
Despite its elegant and relatively lightweight construction, the table is sturdy and practical, making it suitable as a side table, occasional table or lamp table.
The table has been lightly restored and remains in very good vintage condition, retaining the attractive warm tone and character of the oak.
