Wyprodukowany w Tallinnie, Estonia, Estonia LP-001C (ЛП-001С) należy do very first generation of CD players produced in the former Soviet Union. Created at the end of the 1980s, this remarkable machine represents a fascinating meeting of Estonian engineering and Western digital technology. The CD Player was manufactured in Tallinn by Punane RET (Raadio-Elektroonika Tehas) beginning around 1988. It was developed in cooperation with the Czechoslovak company Tesla. Sources give approximately 2,454 units produced. This surviving example with considerably early serial numbers (Nr. 629) have been documented.
One of the most interesting aspects is the Philips CDM-2 mechanism. This is a very early-generation Philips CD transport and is closely related to mechanisms used in early Philips CD players. The LP-001C also uses Philips TDA1540/SAA7030 digital conversion technology, according to detailed technical analysis which is technically related to the Philips CD204/CD104 generation. So although the exterior says Estonia, internally it is a fascinating mixture of Philips + Tesla + Intel + Soviet electronica components.
This is not simply an old CD player. It is a museum-worthy snapshot of the moment when the Compact Disc era reached the countries beyound Iron Curtain.
