An exceptional and highly charming example of European novelty folk art from the late Victorian or Edwardian era. This hand-finished tobacco box (or humidor) is meticulously carved from a single block of hardwood into the expressive form of a monkey’s head. Hardwood (likely Walnut or Pearwood)

The deep interior cavity features clear, visible hand-chisel and gouge marks from its original creation, confirming it was hollowed out by a traditional artisan.Bench The inside of the lid bears a faint, hand-written artisan workbench number "2," a classic historical practice used to ensure this custom-fitted lid matched its exact base during workshop assembly.
The lid operates on its original, authentic flat-back metal hinge recessed into the wood, secured by early, non-uniform flathead screws typical of the late 19th/early 20th century.

The piece remains in beautiful antique condition with a rich, deep reddish-brown original patina. Authentic dust and wax accumulation can be seen in the fine creases of the eyes and hair, emphasizing its age. As is expected with woodwares over a century old, natural wood expansion has given the lid a slight antique wobble when handled. This does not detract from its immense display value. The box itself has mall signs of wear consistent with the age of the object.

The underside of the base features an official stamped registration code: JO 991201834. The "JO" prefix refers to the French Journal Officiel (the Official Gazette of the French Republic), indicating that this antique was formally cataloged and inventoried under a legal publication or within a registered French estate, institutional collection, or state-vetted corporation before entering the private market. This administrative stamping provides an excellent layer of official provenance, confirming its historical circulation through the formal French art and asset market.
