Pair of Late 19th Century Oak Ladder-Back Chairs with Hand-Woven Rush Seats – Circa 1890

Description

An attractive and characterful pair of antique oak ladder-back chairs, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1890.

The chairs feature exceptionally tall ladder backs with four shaped horizontal slats and decorative turned finials. The solid oak frames display a beautiful warm colour, pronounced grain and an authentic patina developed through many decades of use.

A particularly interesting feature is the hand-woven rush seating. Both seats display an unusual and highly decorative geometric pattern, arranged in concentric, angular sections. This distinctive traditional weaving gives the chairs considerable visual character and craftsmanship.

The construction is robust and traditional, with turned wooden stretchers and joined wooden components. The close-up photographs show the aged surfaces, joints and natural irregularities associated with handcrafted antique furniture.

The overall design is consistent with Spanish Provincial / European vernacular ladder-back furniture of the late 19th century.

Both chairs have been preserved with their natural appearance and signs of age. There are normal traces of use, small marks, variations in colour and wear to the wood consistent with their age. These characteristics contribute to their authentic antique appearance and patina.

A decorative and increasingly difficult-to-find pair, particularly appealing for the unusual geometric rush weaving and exceptionally high ladder-back proportions.

Period: Late 19th century, circa 1890
Attributed origin: Spain / Southern Europe
Material: Solid oak, woven natural rush
Style: Spanish Provincial / Vernacular / Rustic
Number of pieces: 2
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear and natural patina. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the description.
