A collection of works by Daido Moriyama, one of Japan's most representative photographers of the 20th century. Needless to say, this work is one of Moriyama's representative works from his early to mid-career, and is a masterpiece on par with ‘Nippon Photo Theatre’ and ‘Goodbye Photography.’ Following ‘Goodbye Photography,’ which rejected conventional notions of photography and realism and declared a break from traditional photographic practices, Moriyama became obsessed with the questions of what photography is and what the act of taking photographs entails, losing the balance between thought and action, and was unable to take photographs for some time. At that time, he recalled the ‘landscape photograph’ taken by Niepce, a pioneer of photographic technology, and this work, ‘Light and Shadow,’ became the catalyst for a return to his roots, realising that it was better to simply capture the facts before his eyes and the products of light and shadow, rather than sticking to a style that sought to express his own thoughts. The first edition was published by Fuyuki-sha in 1982, and in 2009, a new edition in paperback format was published by Kodansha with a cover design by Machikuchi Satoru.
