Broderi (6) - 38 cm - Augsburg broderede graveringer / Zimmerbilleder

AUGSBURG ( German) embroidered cooper engravings made in the late 18th-early19th century. This is very rare genre , barelysurviving today. This is supported by: Silk embroidery technique *Various types of silk thread * Iridescent surface * Applied fur and textile * The contour of the figures is made of engraving, the clothes are made of textile. This is a typical decorative technique from the Augsburg area- it was made almost “industrially” for noble and bourgeois houses at the end of the 18 th century. Background ornamentation (gilded silk imitation) The same mitifs are used in: *Augsburg “zimmerbilder” * German “staffagebild “ type embroidered engravings (1770-1820) . The faces and podtures of the characters. The characteristic shading of the Augsburg engravers is visible. The large eyes, the pronounced nose shadow, the engraved contour all point to this. The theme: an oriental court-a narrative consisting of several scenes this was very popular in the era, especially: *Der Sultan und sein hof (the sultan and his court) * Joseph in Egypt) * Harun al-Rashid stories The narrative cycle of the Sultan’s court,a series of 6 sheets, seems most likely. The multi-figured,richly decorated dresses, badachin all are the sylistic features of the Eastern Court series. Why is there no sinature, number or seal on it? This is completely normal.Such embroidered engravings: were often not numbered, there was no publisher’s designation on them * there was no signature because they were made for mass production, and most of the image surface was covered with textile Nothing was put on the back either-they were often laminated onto cardboard.Thar’s why you won’t find a mark on it- it’s authentic, not a shortage.
