According to legend, Ranryōō was a heroic figure from China who was said to have had an exceptionally beautiful face, and therefore wore a terrifying mask in battle to intimidate his enemies. This dramatic story is reflected in the fierce expression and overwhelming presence of this mask. Carved by hand from wood and finished with layers of dry lacquer, the surface shows deep age, texture, and character. A dragon is placed on top of the head, adding an impressive sculptural element and making the design especially dynamic. The lower jaw is designed to move, suspended with a cord, creating an expressive mechanism that enhances the dramatic impact when used in performance. The title is written inside the mask, adding an important original detail that highlights its identity and theatrical purpose. This is a rare, museum-quality piece that carries remarkable history and atmosphere, and it would make a superb addition to any collection of Japanese theatrical art. The mask remains in antique condition with significant wear, including surface scuffs, staining, hair loss, small scratches, discolouration, and overall age-related patina. The wooden storage box shows insect damage, small scratches, stains, and minor chips. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions of Mask: approx.
