Milan train station in 1961.
Like Grand Central in New York, train stations lend themselves to some of the most beautiful photographs.
This one is no exception, immortalized in 1961 by the Italian photographer Elio Ciol.
The eye is immediately drawn to the luminous halo at the end of the arch.
Elio Ciol (born in 1929) is an Italian photographer and publisher, born in Casarsa della Delizia, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where he has primarily lived and worked. His father was a photographer and ran a studio in their hometown.
He began practicing photography at the age of fifteen, worked full-time in a studio from the age of nineteen, and devoted an increasing amount of his free time to personal photography. A trip to Assisi in 1951 profoundly affected him; Ciol subsequently stayed there for extended periods, taking numerous photographs.
In 1963, he moved to Milan to work on projects for the publishing house Altimani. The company quickly encountered financial difficulties, and Ciol returned to Casarsa, driven by a new approach to illustration and layout. Since then, he has illustrated dozens of books.
