Bronzealder Bronze Small Axehead (Ingen mindstepris)
A Bronze Age small axe head cast from bronze featuring a short cylindrical shaft-hole. The blade extends in a downward curve from the narrow neck. The cutting edge displays rounded edges. Patination and earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with age, such as chipping and surface scratches.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites settled in the Western Asiatic region. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of these bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Most of these bronze items have been recovered in funerary contexts.
Measurements: (circa) L 8.9cm x H 3.7cm
Provenance: Ex London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
