Boris Pasternak - Doctor Zhivago - 1997
Boris Pasternak – Doctor Zhivago – Easton Press – 1997 - Great Books of the 20th Century Series
This Easton Press edition presents Pasternak's only novel in full, including the twenty-five poems attributed to his protagonist Yuri Zhivago. First published in Italy in 1957 after Soviet authorities refused to print it, the novel brought Pasternak the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1958, which he was forced to decline under state pressure. He died two years later without seeing his work published in his homeland.
The narrative follows Yuri Zhivago, a physician and poet, through the upheavals of the Russian Revolution and Civil War. His relationship with Lara Antipova unfolds against a backdrop of political violence, displacement, and the slow dissolution of the world he knew. Pasternak, himself a poet before turning to prose, structured the novel to culminate in Zhivago's verses, which form an integral part of the work rather than a mere appendix.
This edition uses the translation by Max Hayward and Manya Harari, with the poems rendered by Bernard Guilbert Guerney. Richard Sparks provides color illustrations that capture the novel's atmosphere of frozen landscapes, wartime chaos, and fleeting intimacy.
