Romersk antik Bronze 'Det Onde Øje' Ring (Ingen mindstepris)

Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid. Ancient Roman bronze ring with a broad, oval bezel engraved with multiple circular “Eye” motifs. The bezel itself is almond-shaped, further reinforcing the eye symbolism. The engraved decoration consists of a symmetrical arrangement of concentric circles with central dots, forming stylised pupils across the surface. The shoulders taper smoothly into a solid hoop with flat inner surface and rounded exterior. The combination of bezel shape and repeated circular motifs creates a deliberate apotropaic design. Such “evil eye” imagery was believed to ward off malevolent forces, envy and misfortune, offering symbolic protection to the wearer. Outside diameter: ± 21,2 mm Inside diameter: ± 16,6 - 19 mm Bezel: ± 18,5 x 12,8 mm Condition: intact and wearable condition. Surface wear, patination and encrustation consistent with age and use. The engraved decoration remains clearly visible. No visible repairs. Certificate of Authenticity (PDF-format): available upon request for all sales of € 100 or higher. Apotropaic symbols were widely used in Roman jewellery and personal objects. The eye motif in particular was thought to counteract the “malocchio” or evil glance, a belief deeply rooted in Mediterranean antiquity. Rings bearing protective devices combined ornament with spiritual safeguarding, offering insight into everyday beliefs and personal superstition in the Roman Empire.
