1998 x 4 bottles & 2000 x 2 bottles of Valenciso Deep cherry red with a small ochre-maroon rim. Very fine, precise nose with aromas of red berries over toasty notes of new wood that are still very lively. Small forest fruits become increasingly prominent, with a certain freshness, sweetness and menthol. There is a cool minerality of pebbles, very young leather, spices and mentholated leaf litter. The evolution of the alcohol in the bottle gives us sensations of white flowers (tuberose). On the palate, it has an astringent attack, with a certain bitterness on the mid-palate that could be from the toasted wood, but after so many years I would be surprised. It evolves very well, leaving sensations of vegetation, liquorice and coffee, with slight hints of spice and toast. The aftertaste is more robust, even somewhat dry and roasted, which supports the structure of the wine. One of the most beautiful projects in Rioja, the winery is beautiful and they already have two decades of production behind them. They have a very sincere approach to wine, as evidenced by their explanation that they produce only one "reserva" wine per vintage, which they continue to do every year. I believe this wine will improve in the bottle. I notice a slight lack of alignment between the nose and the palate, and those bitter notes that, as I said, surprise me. The nose is delightful, and the winery is very professional.
