* James Cook (1728 – 1779) was an officer in the Royal Navy, as well as a renowned explorer and skilled mapmaker. Between 1768 and 1779, he commanded three major expeditions across the Pacific and Southern Oceans. During these voyages, he achieved the first documented circumnavigation of New Zealand’s principal islands and led the earliest recorded European expeditions to Australia’s eastern coastline and to the Hawaiian Islands.
