Pan is the deity of the wild and uncontaminated world, of outdoor life and unbridled freedom, of summer heat and fertility: it is no coincidence that he is often depicted in a state of erotic arousal. All the characteristics attributed to him in ancient myth reflect the customs of pastoral and agricultural life. Pan is credited with the invention of the flute itself (in Greek sỳrinx), made from the reed into which the nymph Syrinx was transformed after rejecting the god's amorous advances.
