Heinrich Martin Weber - Autograph Letter - 1904

Heinrich Martin Weber (1842-1913) Autograph letter to an unnamed correspondent, signed 'H Weber' 'Strassburg i Els. 11 Dez 04/ Goethestrasse 27 with integral blank leaf. Thanks the correspondent for his interest in studying Weber's' Algebra' and asks leave to request the publisher to send him a copy of the second edition 'in my name'. As regards his correspondent's enquiry about an equation §45 (§58 in the second edition), Weber states that this does not contradict the sentence on p.174 of the 1st edition (p.223 of the 2nd edition), and suggests a comparison with p.463 of the 1st edition. Heinrich Weber entered the University of Heidelberg in 1860 but spent a year at Leipzig before returning there to complete his education. He was awarded a doctorate from Heidelberg in 1863, moving to Königsberg for his habilitation thesis. In 1866 he became a Privatdozent at Heidelberg, and three years later he was appointed to a chair there. Over the next twenty-five years, Weber taught at a number of different institutions, in Zurich at the Eidgenössische Polytechnikum at the University of Königsberg, and at Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg. His final appointment was in Strasbourg in 1895, where he remained for the rest of his life. Weber's main work was in algebra, number theory, analysis and applications of analysis to mathematical physics, and he is best known for his outstanding book 'Lehrbuch der Algebra' 1895. The condition of the letter is in very good condition, slight darkening along the centre fold of the page.
