Handcrafted Bizen Ware 備前 - Skulptur Stentøj - Japan (Ingen mindstepris)

Japanese Handcrafted Bizen Ware Rabbit Sculpture – Studio Pottery – Zodiac Rabbit “U” – Kenichi – Decorative Art – With Original Wooden Box This charming rabbit sculpture was created by the Bizen ware artist Kenichi. The piece beautifully captures the calm posture and gentle expression of a resting rabbit, rendered with remarkable naturalism. Bizen ware is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, originating in Okayama Prefecture and known for its unglazed surfaces and wood-fired kiln effects. During the firing process, ash deposits and flame exposure create unique natural markings such as goma (sesame) and sangiri patterns, giving each piece a completely individual appearance. This sculpture features the warm reddish-brown clay body typical of Bizen pottery, with subtle variations in tone created by the kiln firing. The carefully sculpted fur texture and softly curved ears give the rabbit a lifelike presence. The box inscription includes the zodiac sign “U” (Rabbit), indicating that the work was created as a symbolic representation of the rabbit in the Japanese zodiac. Rabbit motifs are highly appreciated in Japanese art as symbols of gentleness, prosperity, and good fortune. A refined decorative object that embodies the quiet beauty of Japanese ceramic artistry. ⸻ Size Height: 9 cm Width: 16.5 cm Depth: 8.5 cm ⸻ Weight 435 g / 0.435 kg ⸻ Condition Very good vintage condition. Minor surface marks typical of handmade Bizen pottery, but no cracks or repairs. ⸻ Artist Profile Kenichi is a Bizen ware ceramic artist who works within the traditional wood-firing techniques of Bizen pottery. His works often emphasize the natural texture of clay and the subtle beauty created through kiln firing, reflecting the aesthetic philosophy of traditional Japanese ceramics.
