Etrusco-Korinthisk Terrakotta Kylix - 7 cm
A terracotta Etruscan kylix with a Corinthian influence. Ca. 580 - 560 BC, attributable to the Group of the Phoenician Palmettes.
This beautiful wine drinking cup would have been used during social occasions or banquets. Has an attractive orientalized geometric design of rays, bands and rosettes, with a dark brown slip and added red and white paint on incised details. Size: 7.0 cm high, 16.6 cm wide with handles, 13.3 cm diameter (not including handles).
Etruscans were proto-Roman, and essentially founded Rome, which was a small settlement until the Etruscans arrived. Etruscan kings ruling Rome early in its history and dominated Italy prior to Rome's rise. They were a sophisticated city-state culture that developed techniques for constructing city walls and drainage systems upon which Rome's subsequent aqueduct system was based.
Provenance. Los Angeles private collection, purchased at 2023 auction, Apollo Art Auctions, UK; ex. English private collection, UK, acquired at Grays Antique Market (London) in the 1980s.
