It's a practical tool made for storing and carrying brushes, ink, inkstones, seals, ledgers, etc., in places like a merchant's cash register or on a ship. This is also perfect to store maintenance kit for swords. Product Details Name: Inkstone box (suzuribako), hanging inkstone box (kakesuzuri), or tool box with small drawer. Main Materials: Cedar, paulownia, zelkova, or mulberry are commonly used. The heavy, substantial feel comes from the aging process. Structure: Upper section: The lid opens, providing space for inkstones, brushes, etc. Lower section: There is one drawer for storing seals, coins, ledgers, etc. Hardware: Features a carrying handle and sturdy, antique metal fittings (made of iron, etc.). Historical Background and Use This type of box, formerly known as a "kake-suzuri" (hanging inkstone), was particularly valuable on merchant ships (such as Kitamae-bune) and in shops from the Edo period to the Meiji period. It served as a kind of "mobile office," allowing for the organized management of important valuables and writing implements. While there may be ink stains inside, this is evidence of actual use as a tool and is sometimes appreciated as an antique "character." Currently, it is often reused not only as a calligraphy tool box but also as an antique trinket box or interior decoration. 16*25*14cm Total 1323g (I1693)
